Ghost Bikes

My heart hits the floor every time I see a new ghost bike appear. And it seems to be happening more and more frequently these days. This is something near and dear to my heart, having been through the experience of having a loved one seriously injured in a car-bike collision.
This particular bike is in memory of a man killed about 6 days ago. He will clearly be sorely missed. I think it’s important to have these ghost bikes serve as reminders that we all have to share the road.
Here in Colorado, we have a great organization Bicycle Colorado that is working to improve conditions and safety for Coloradans. On a national scale, Bikes Belong provides grants that help build bicycle friendly communities, Safe Routes to School, and keep cycling relevant on a national level. I’m also a fan of covering your bike with reflectors and so many lights that you look like a UFO. And of course…HELMETS!

Not sure if I am allowed to comment on this blog, since I have been known to wear lycra.
I ride by there all the time – usually the other direction. I’m not sure what to say, other than yes – my heart hits the floor.
One more thing to add for your safety list – I can’t believe how many cyclist I see wearing headphones. You have to hear as well as see to be safe on a bike.
